Demand Amazon to Disable the "Based on Your Reading" Recommendations
The Issue
We've all been there. You're browsing Amazon, and a book with an enticing cover or provocative title catches your eye. In a moment of foolish curiosity, you click to view a sample. Unbeknownst to you, this single action has lasting consequences. Amazon retains this information and repeatedly presents your lapse of judgement and similar titles as suggestions in the "Based on your reading" section, right on their homepage.
This feature can lead to uncomfortable situations when using shared computers at places like libraries or even at home with kids around, not to mention on shared Kindle devices. The books we once glanced at out of curiosity are now displayed for all to see again and again - forever, with no way to opt out or remove the unwanted suggestions.
Amazon is one of the largest online retailers worldwide, with over 300 million active customers (Statista, 2020). This means that countless individuals could potentially be facing similar situations daily due to this feature.
We urge Amazon to respect its users' privacy by providing an option to disable the "based on your reading" recommendations across all platforms and web addresses. This change will ensure that our fleeting lapses of judgment won't turn into persistent reminders in our shopping experience.
Please sign this petition if you believe in making online shopping more private and less intrusive!
