The Issue

This is more than just a history project, it's a wake-up call.

When I first chose to research the history of coffee, I thought I was just exploring a popular drink. But the deeper I looked, the more I realized this topic was about much more than coffee beans and caffeine. It’s about people. Real people, from the past and present, whose stories have been hidden behind many factors that contribute to our daily life.

Every time we sip a cup of coffee; we rarely think about the big story behind it. We don’t see the hands that picked the beans under scorching heat. We don’t see the workers who are paid far below a living wage. We don’t see the children forced into labor, or the communities trapped in cycles of poverty because the global coffee industry often prioritizes profit over people.

The history of coffee is deeply connected to slavery that still happens today. For centuries, enslaved people were forced to work on coffee plantations under brutal conditions. And even though slavery is officially over, exploitation still exists in modern forms. Through unfair wages, unsafe conditions, and economic systems that continue to take advantage of the most vulnerable.

This project has changed how I see the world. And now, I want to change how you see your coffee.

Fair Trade certification is one major step toward justice. When a coffee brand is Fair Trade certified, it means they’re committed to treating their workers fairly paying better wages, ensuring safer working conditions, protecting the environment, and investing in communities. It’s not just a label; it’s a promise of dignity.

By signing this petition, you're saying that people matter more than profit. You're standing up for workers who are often invisible in our global supply chains. You’re helping build a future where ethical practices are the norm. Not the exception.

Together, we can demand change. We can support companies that care. And we can push the coffee industry to do better because it has to.

Please, take a moment to sign this petition. Share it. Talk about it. Be a part of the movement to make every cup of coffee a little more just.
