Demand Alberta justice system reform to address over-incarceration of Indigenous people.

Demand Alberta justice system reform to address over-incarceration of Indigenous people.
The Issue
As social work students who are passionate about supporting Indigenous issues, we call for meaningful and transformative change. Indigenous People have been disproportionately affected in Alberta's justice system, a glaring disparity that is neither just nor acceptable. This overrepresentation is rooted in historical and structural impacts of colonization, including the devastating legacy of residential schools, systemic discrimination, and ongoing social and economic inequities.
The statistics are alarmingly clear. Indigenous Peoples face severe overrepresentation in Canadian systems, although they are about 5% of the population, they make up over 30% of those incarcerated. In Alberta, about 74% of children in care are Indigenous, and Indigenous women account for over 70% of incarcerated women in some federal institutions highlighting ongoing systemic injustice
We propose the following solutions to address this crisis:
1. Implement restorative justice programs that prioritize healing and reconciliation over purely punitive measures.
2. Address root causes of incarceration and invest in housing, mental health services, addiction treatment, and employment supports for Indigenous communities.
3. Implement culturally appropriate youth programs to reduce contact with the justice system
4. Develop justice policies in partnership with Indigenous governments, Elders, and community organizations.
We call for urgent reforms and collaboration with Indigenous leaders to address these injustices and reduce the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the justice system.
Stand up for justice by helping us address these systemic inequities affecting Indigenous Peoples. Sign this petition to support efforts towards a fair and just society for all.
