Demand AFL uphold consistent disciplinary standards
Demand AFL uphold consistent disciplinary standards
The issue
To the Australian Football League and AFL Commission,
As a mother, I teach my children that actions have consequences. Whether you're popular, talented, successful, or generally a good person, no one is above the rules. It is troubling, therefore, to see a different message being sent by the recent decision in the case of Lachie Neale.
The decision by the AFL to overturn Lachie Neale's suspension is a direct contradiction to the principles of fairness and accountability that the league stands for. In a sport where athletes are role models for millions, what kind of message are we sending if we allow some individuals to be treated differently simply because of their status or talent?
Consistent and fair application of the rules should be a non-negotiable standard. Every athlete deserves the same level of accountability, regardless of their achievements or popularity. By overturning such decisions without clear, transparent justifications, it risks eroding public trust in the fairness of the AFL's judicial process.
The AFL must set an example through consistency and fairness. There needs to be a transparent and standardized disciplinary system that leaves no room for favoritism or ambiguity. Standards should not shift depending on who is in question; rather, uniform criteria should be applied across all cases to uphold the integrity of the game.
We urge the AFL Commission to implement a comprehensive review of its disciplinary standards. This review should involve stakeholders at all levels, including players, officials, and most importantly, the fans who are the lifeblood of the game. Only through sincere commitment to consistency can we ensure that the true spirit of fairness and sportsmanship prevails.
Join me in demanding transparency and fairness within the AFL's disciplinary system. Let us stand up for the values our sport represents, ensuring our children and future generations can look up to a league where actions have real and fair consequences. Sign this petition to call for a meaningful change that protects the integrity of the game for everyone.
