Demand Additional Proposal for the future “Government Campus”

The Issue

The present downtown city tennis courts, ball fields, skateboard park, basketball courts and community center have been serving our community for over 60 years. It's a place where we come together, engage in healthy activities, and build a stronger, more connected neighborhood. Now, our beloved athletic facilities are under threat from proposed real estate development.

Currently, the city council is considering turning the entire parcel of taxpayer owned land between the Brightline Station and Crawford Blvd. over to a developer for condominiums, apartments, and a hotel, within the so-called “Government Campus”.  While housing is important, the value of public spaces for community engagement and health cannot be overstated. Most worryingly of all, we, as the present residents and taxpayers, and  the most affected by this decision, will not be given a vote in this crucial community matter. It's time for our voices to be heard, not just by petition or in meeting but by a ballot.

Therefore, we ask the city council to seek an additional proposal—one that focuses on improving and expanding the existing athletic facilities behind City Hall, rather than eliminating them. This alternative proposal should then be put to a vote, allowing us—the residents—to make the final decision on its approval. Let's preserve, improve, and expand our outdoor recreational facilities to ensure the longevity and vitality of our community.

Your signature can help save our beloved green space, and ensure that our sporting facilities continue to serve our community for another 60 years and beyond. Please sign this petition.
