Demand Action from TfL: End Unnecessary Strikes and Improve Services
The Issue
Every day, I, like thousands of other Londoners, rely on Transport for London (TfL) to earn a living. Unfortunately, the frequent and often unnecessary strikes are making life increasingly difficult, and for people like me with a spinal condition, it's more than just an inconvenience—it's a painful challenge. Strikes mean I have to walk an hour and fifteen minutes to work and back home, aggravating my condition significantly.
The frustration doesn't end there. TfL's services are notoriously expensive, with fares being some of the highest in Europe. Despite paying a premium, commuters are met with inadequate customer service, crowded trains, late-running buses, and uncomfortably filthy seats. The so-called 'regulation of services' seems more like a joke when refunds are rare and overcharging is rampant.
During strikes, buses are not only late but also packed beyond capacity, forcing individuals like me to seek alternative, uncomfortable, and painful means of transportation. This not only strains our health but also our finances, as finding a reliable ride during these disruptions can prove costly. Taxis are busy and expensive.
It's time for Londoners to demand accountability from TfL. We deserve a transit system that respects its users, offers value for money, and operates without unnecessary disruptions. Boycotting TfL until they commit to significant improvements in service quality and fare fairness is a step towards a solution.
Join me in calling on TfL to end these unfair strikes and institute real changes that address the daily issues faced by commuters. Sign this petition to prove that we won't stand for being held to ransom by a system we've paid into.
FACTS:
The average full-time worker in the UK works 36.6 hours per week. TfL staff on strike want a 32 hour working week.
According to TfL, the average tube driver has a starting salary of £71,160. Station staff, who are also striking, start on £35,270 and within a few months can qualify for a salary of £44,140. Average UK gross salary is £37,600. TfL get paid very well, plus they get free travel.
Enough is enough.
