Demand Action for Safety and Education of Beggars' Children in Potchefstroom

Demand Action for Safety and Education of Beggars' Children in Potchefstroom
The Issue
Every day, as I drive my own child to school, I pass a heartbreaking sight at the corner of Chief Albert Luthuli Dr / Walter Sisulu Ln in Potchefstroom.
A woman with a baby on her back begs for food and money amidst the dust and noise of the busy highway. The baby is exposed to harsh elements, its safety compromised by its proximity to traffic. Sometimes this child sits right next to the curb, centimetres away from speeding card and trucks.
This is a sight that raises questions about nutrition, education, and overall well-being of this baby. And the context is not just about this one child; the situation represents a broader issue affecting many children in our community. According to UNICEF South Africa (2019), 63% of South African children live in poverty, often lacking access to basic services like healthcare and education.
Our petition is directed at the Department of Social Development (DSD). We implore them to investigate this situation urgently and take necessary action for this child's welfare - ensuring they receive adequate nutrition, proper shelter from harsh weather conditions, access to quality education and are protected from hazardous environments.
The biggest concern we raise is that it is absolutely NOT necessary - and on the contrary, harmful and dangerous - to have the baby involved in the begging process, as above. The baby must be in a safe and nurturing environment, while the woman is free to pursue her interests as she sees fit.
We also urge the DSD to address systemic issues that force women into such desperate situations where they have no choice but expose their young ones' health and safety risks.
Let us stand together for the rights of this child and every child in Potchefstroom - because every child deserves a safe environment conducive for growth!
Please sign this petition today; let's demand action for this baby's health and safety!
