Demand Accountability from NY Times CEO Meredith Kopit Levien for Irresponsible Leadership
The Issue
We are deeply concerned about the state of unbiased and vetted reporting in our media. This petition is a call to hold Meredith Kopit Levien, CEO of The New York Times, accountable for damaging reporting and hiring practices. The New York Times holds a significant place in journalism, known as "the newspaper of record" and is considered by many as a reliable source of news.
The New York Times' unverified and damaging report on a misfired rocket in Gaza was erroneously blamed on Israel without any substantial proof. This incident has had a domino effect on media globally as well as millions of social media posts reporting this unsubstantiated information. It has shaken the public's trust in fair reporting. This uncorroborated report fueled conflicts, escalated tensions, and incited violence. This irresponsible article likely led to Biden's meeting in the Middle East being canceled. It has now been confirmed by multiple sources that this was a misfired rocket by Hamas that landed on a parking lot, not a hospital. Death reports are also vastly exaggerated.
In addition, The New York Times has also just announced the rehiring of Hitler-praising Soliman Hijjy to cover Israel-Hamas war. This is unacceptable and The New York Times should be held to a hire standard of journalistic integrity. We call on advertisers to cease advertising until Meredith Kopit Levien steps down and someone else is brought in to restore journalistic integrity.
In 2023 alone, The New York Times reached over 9.88 million subscribers worldwide. With such an extensive reach comes great responsibility. We demand transparency from Ms. Levien and her team at The New York Times regarding this matter beyond the Editor's note they published today.
We urge all readers who value unbiased journalism to join us in this cause. Let's stand together for truthfulness and accountability in news reporting! Please sign this petition today.
