We, residents and advocates from Tuscaloosa, AL, USA, are calling attention to a deplorable incident of racial profiling which occurred at Nick's In The Sticks on a Friday night. The manager notably referred to African American guests using a derogatory racial epithet. Although an apology was made, it fails to adequately address the deep-rooted harm and humiliation caused. It is clear from his lack of remorse that his apology wasn't heartfelt, but a mere attempt to mitigate the backlash. This incident represents a much larger societal problem – racial profiling which is unfortunately all too common. Pew Research shows that 58% of African Americans believe they are often the subject of racial discrimination (Pew Research Center, 2020). We seek not only a sincere, public apology but also demand that necessary actions are taken to address, rectify, and prevent racial discrimination from happening in the future at Nick's In The Sticks by shutting it down.
