Demand accountability for police shooting of dogs in Montreal

Demand accountability for police shooting of dogs in Montreal
The Issue
Living in the Montreal area has instilled in me a deep sense of dread, fearing for the safety of animals in our community. Recently, on October 8th, 2025, two dogs, used as guard dogs at a car dealership, were tragically shot by police officers in Saint Leonard, Montreal. The situation was distressing enough for those of us who believe in the humane treatment of all living beings. Especially concerning was the apparent lack of compassion shown by the dogs' handler towards their death, demonstrating a failure to value their lives. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/montreal-police-saint-leonard-dog-attack-9.6931629
While the officers stated that a woman at the scene was unconscious and the dogs were interfering, it is important to recognize that alternative, non-lethal methods could have been employed to remove the animals safely. This incident only highlights the urgent need for mandatory training of all police officers in humane animal handling and the importance of considering Animal Services as a first responder option in such scenarios.
Furthermore, there is still hope for the remaining third dog who survived. It is imperative that this dog is sent to a loving, no-kill sanctuary, ensuring they get the care and love they deserve, rather than facing the threat of euthanasia.
To prevent similar tragic incidents from occurring, we are calling for a civilian third-party investigation into any case where an animal is harmed or killed by law enforcement. This level of accountability and oversight is crucial for maintaining public trust and ensuring the humane treatment of animals. If you are a witness, make complaints here.
The general public can voice their complaints here. And here.
Please join us in urging the authorities to adopt these measures. By implementing these changes, we can protect our beloved pets and ensure justice for those who lost their lives. Your signature can make a significant impact in safeguarding the lives of countless animals in Montreal. Sign this petition to demand justice and humane treatment today.
