The Issue

The sudden revelation of a $14.7 million fraud in Mobile's Arena project has left many of us in the community feeling betrayed and deeply concerned about the transparency of our city's financial dealings. It is troubling to learn that such a significant amount was reportedly paid from the General Fund instead of the designated Capital Projects Fund, raising serious questions about the potential misuse of public resources. What's more perplexing is the fact that the Mobile City Council was not timely informed about these transactions, which undermines the trust that we place in our local government.

The Mobile community deserves transparency and accountability from its leaders. We are concerned that without proper oversight, similar occurrences could happen again, further depleting funds that are meant to be invested in our community's growth and well-being. Our taxes should be used responsibly, with a clear understanding of how and where they are being allocated.

We propose an independent forensic financial investigation with a substantial 10-year lookback period. This investigation should be carried out by a qualified and independent firm to ensure impartiality and thoroughness. Such a move will not only identify how the fraud occurred but also assist in creating mechanisms to prevent such financial mishandlings in the future.

This is a critical moment for the Mobile City Council to exercise its oversight authority. We urge them to take swift action in addressing these discrepancies, ensuring that all involved parties are held accountable for their actions. By doing so, the Council will demonstrate a commitment to transparency, integrity, and the trust of Mobile's residents.

Sign this petition to demand accountability for the reported Arena project fraud and champion the need for a comprehensive investigation. Let’s stand together to protect our city’s finances and ensure such issues are never overlooked again.

“Thank you for reaching out and providing an opportunity to respond directly to the citizens who signed this petition. I appreciate their engagement and their willingness to demand transparency and accountability from their elected officials. I have called for an independent investigation into the $14.7 million fraud involving the City of Mobile, and I continue to stand by that request. Based on the information presented to the City Council thus far, I believe an independent investigation is necessary to determine exactly what happened, how it happened, who was responsible for ensuring financial safeguards were followed, and what corrective actions are needed. I I also believe we must examine the authorization and movement of funds between City accounts, the timing of notifications to the Council, and whether existing financial policies were properly followed. This investigation should not be limited to one transaction or one employee. We need a comprehensive, independent review that examines internal controls, financial procedures, oversight, and any relevant history of similar transactions. I am open to examining a longer lookback period if the evidence and scope of the investigation support it. My responsibility as an elected official is to protect taxpayer dollars and ensure that the people of Mobile receive honest answers. This is not about political parties, personalities, or pointing fingers. It is about transparency, accountability, and restoring public trust. I encourage residents to continue attending City Council meetings, asking questions, and remaining engaged throughout this process. I am one of seven City Council members, but I will continue using my voice and my vote to advocate for an independent investigation and meaningful financial reforms. The citizens of Mobile deserve answers, and I will continue working to get them. Thank you again for allowing me to share my position directly with the petition signers. -Cory [Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters.
