The Issue

Having cherished memories, photos, and connections tied to my Facebook account for a decade, I never imagined facing the loss of these precious links to my past and relationships. Like many others, I faced the heartache of having my account disabled by Meta’s AI moderation system. It's frustrating and painful that a platform that championed human connection and interaction overlooks the essential human touch when real issues arise. How can Meta promote so much about connectivity when it permits an automated system to disrupt lives without a semblance of transparency or accountability?

Meta’s AI moderation has been disabling accounts indiscriminately for years, leaving users like myself stranded and isolated. Although some have navigated the lengthy and often discouraging process to appeal their disabled accounts successfully, this rarely happens and, when it does, takes far too long. Disturbingly, this process can even involve fees for "support"—a service intended to assist users, not charge them for their misfortune. This pay-to-fix approach is unjust and discriminatory.

Meta's negligence in addressing these AI moderation flaws forces users into years of painstaking and cold interactions with an algorithm, keeping them in limbo and undermining their ability to connect with friends, family, and communities. This situation damages lives, turning a tool meant for building relationships into one destroying them.

We urge Meta to radically re-evaluate their reliance on AI moderation, implementing immediate improvements such as hiring more human moderators, offering free and accessible avenues for user appeals, and increasing transparency regarding why accounts are disabled and how they can be reinstated.

Join me in urging Meta to realize the very essence of their slogan—to connect people by introducing human care and judgment into their moderation policies. Sign this petition to demand that Meta takes responsibility and makes necessary changes to its AI moderation to serve and protect the very people that built their community—the users.
