The Issue
Across Canada, individuals and families are grappling with the devastating effects of inadequate mental health and addiction services. It is heartbreaking to see that despite federal funding being allocated for these essential services, provincial governments are not mandated to use the funds as intended. This leaves vulnerable populations without the support they desperately need.
As someone deeply affected by the limited access to mental health services, I have witnessed the dire consequences of this funding disparity. People are losing their lives because they cannot access the care that could save them. The funds are there, but the lack of accountability and regulations ensures they are often diverted to other areas, leaving those in need stranded and hopeless.
The Canadian Mental Health Association reports that one in five Canadians experience mental illness in a given year, and the need for supportive services has been escalating. With skyrocketing numbers of mental health crises and addiction-related issues, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we are in the midst of a public health emergency. Yet, the services to counter these crises are grossly underfunded and undermined.
We need to ensure that every dollar intended for mental health and addiction services is used for precisely that purpose. Provincial governments must be held accountable for the responsibility entrusted to them. We insist on a transparent and traceable system where federal funds are monitored to ensure they reach those they are meant to help.
Immediate action is needed to change legislation. We call upon policymakers to enforce stricter regulations requiring provinces to allocate their received federal funds towards mental health and addiction services. Such a mandate will not only transform the lives of countless Canadians but also pave the way to a healthier, more resilient nation.
By signing this petition, you are advocating for responsible spending and accountability to prioritize and improve mental health and addiction services in Canada. Together, we can save lives and foster hope for individuals facing these challenges.
