Demand Accountability for India's Involvement in Sikh Extrajudicial Killings

Demand Accountability for India's Involvement in Sikh Extrajudicial Killings
The Issue
To the Honorable Gang of Eight members:
- Senator Chuck Schumer (Majority Leader)
- Senator Mitch McConnell (Minority Leader)
- Senator Mark Warner (Chair, United States Senate Committee on Intelligence)
- Senator Marco Rubio (Ranking Member, United States Senate Committee on Intelligence)
- Representative Kevin McCarthy (Speaker of the House)
- Representative Hakeem Jeffries (Minority Leader)
- Representative Michael Turner (Chair, U.S. House Committee on Intelligence)
- Representative Jim Himes (Ranking Member, U.S. House Committee on Intelligence)
We call upon you urgently to investigate India's involvement in the extrajudicial killing of a Canadian activist on Canadian soil. The recent statements by the Canadian Prime Minister in the House of Commons and recent evidence indicate that the Indian government is very likely complicit in such heinous acts against Sikhs, even going so far as to target American citizens on U.S. soil after the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Historical Context: The 1984 Sikh Genocide, beginning with an attack on Sri Darbar Sahib (also sometimes referred to as the "Golden Temple"), which then spiraled into widespread anti-Sikh violence across India. Beyond India, media reports suggest Indian government agencies have even targeted Sikh activists internationally.
Recent Revelations: Pursuant to a "duty to warn," the FBI has been alerting Americans of credible threats targeting their lives on U.S. soil.
Ongoing Concerns: U.S. citizens feel unsafe in their homes across the country, unsure if they will be the next target of the Indian government.
Our Requests:
We request that the Gang of Eight immediately seek an intelligence briefing on India's involvement in the killing of Mr. Nijjar on Canadian soil. We further ask you to closely examine the nature and extent of the threats posed to American citizens on American soil. We further demand open hearings to allow witnesses to appear and give testimony on these issues before the Congress. American citizens, Sikh and non-Sikh alike need to know who is behind these threats and what is being done to thwart them. Finally, we demand that Congress pass all necessary laws to keep Americans of all backgrounds safe from India's transnational repression.
