Citizens of Seguin! Speak up at the State of the City event on September 29th!

While everyone is busy schmoozing with the upper echelon of Seguin’s brain trust at the upcoming State of the City event, I hope the citizens see right through the inevitable dog and pony show. While Mayor Donna Dodgen and City Manager Steve Parker distract you with slickly produced video slideshows, glossy brochures, raffle prize drawings, and choreographed theatrics bragging about Seguin’s 'progress', the reality on our streets tells a story of a blatant, systemic double standard where the government is above the law and the commoner is under it.In fact, the timing of this entire celebration is a slap in the face to the community. The city is throwing this elaborate party on Tuesday, September 29—just four days after the September 25 one-year anniversary of an out-of-control Seguin Police Department officer slamming a 16-year-old child face-first into the concrete over an electric bicycle traffic stop.Look at Case 23-1166-CR-A. The leader of the Alpha shift, Sgt. Bruno Cavazos, completely blew off a state subpoena to testify in a felony trial. When Judge Jessica Crawford directly demanded to know where the officer was, the prosecutor openly informed Judge Jessica Crawford and the entire courtroom that Sgt. Bruno Cavazos was in 'Orlando, Florida. DISNEY WORLD.' If you or I disrespected Judge Jessica Crawford’s court to ride rollercoasters, Judge Jessica Crawford would have had us sitting in a jail cell for contempt. Yet, Chief Jason Brady ensured Sgt. Bruno Cavazos was not arrested, not charged, not fined, and not even disciplined.Sound familiar? It should.This is the exact same leadership culture under Chief Jason Brady that looked the community in the eye and defended the officer who gave that 16-year-old child a concussion. Chief Jason Brady aggressively claimed it was 'textbook technique' for months—a transparent play by Chief Jason Brady to shield the city from civil liability—only to be forced to fire that exact same officer later when he predictably used excessive force on an adult.Citizens, do not let the slick presentations, four-day-late anniversaries, and staged applause distract you. Show up to the Seguin Coliseum on September 29 and take Chief Jason Brady and the city council to task. Ask them why Sgt. Bruno Cavazos is insulated from the law, and why they choose to protect themselves against legal exposure before they protect the children of Seguin.Descartes once said, “Question everything.” It’s time to start with our own leaders.
