Demand Accountability and Transparency from the Law Society of Alberta

WHY I’M SUPPORTING THIS PETITION
A concerned citizen’s statement
I’m supporting this petition because what happened here should concern every Albertan who believes in fairness, accountability, and the integrity of our justice system.
A member of the public brought forward a serious, well‑documented complaint to the Law Society of Alberta — supported by transcripts, court orders, RCMP correspondence, and other evidence. Instead of receiving a transparent and meaningful review, they were met with fourteen months of form‑letter emails, no disclosure, no opportunity to respond, and ultimately a dismissal with no reasons. When they appealed, they received no reasons again. And when the Certified Record was produced, it confirmed the most troubling fact of all: no investigation had ever taken place.
This isn’t just one person’s problem. This is a systemic problem.
If a regulator can dismiss a complaint without investigating it, without explaining its decision, and without giving the complainant any chance to participate, then the public cannot trust that the legal profession is being held to the standards it promises.
We rely on the Law Society to protect the public interest. We rely on it to ensure that lawyers — who hold enormous power in people’s lives — are accountable for their conduct. When the Law Society fails to investigate serious allegations supported by evidence, it undermines confidence in the entire justice system.
I’m supporting this petition because I believe Albertans deserve better. We deserve a regulator that:
investigates serious complaints
provides disclosure
allows meaningful participation
gives reasons for its decisions
operates transparently
and respects the public it serves
This petition isn’t about punishing anyone. It isn’t about taking sides in a family dispute. It’s about ensuring that every Albertan can trust that when they raise concerns about professional conduct, those concerns will be taken seriously.
If this can happen once, it can happen again. That’s why I’m adding my voice. That’s why I’m asking others to join me.
Together, we can help restore fairness, transparency, and accountability in Alberta’s legal profession.

Restore Fairness and Accountability in Alberta’s Legal Profession
Petition Summary
For fourteen months, the Law Society of Alberta (LSA) handled a serious professional‑conduct complaint with no investigation, no disclosure, and no reasons. The Certified Record confirms that no investigative steps were taken at all.
This petition calls for a transparent, accountable, and lawful review process — not just for one case, but for every Albertan who relies on the integrity of the legal profession.
Why This Matters
The Law Society of Alberta is responsible for protecting the public interest and maintaining confidence in the justice system. When a complaint is filed — especially one supported by transcripts, court orders, RCMP correspondence, and documented procedural misconduct — the public expects a fair, transparent, and meaningful review.
Instead, the process in this case consisted of:
Fourteen months of identical form‑letter emails
No interviews
No document requests
No analysis
No disclosure of opposing counsel’s submissions
No opportunity to respond
No reasons for dismissal
No reasons on appeal
No evidence of any investigation in the Certified Record
This is not how a public‑interest regulator should function.
These failures don’t just affect one person — they undermine public trust in the entire legal system. When a regulator dismisses a complaint without investigation, without transparency, and without reasons, the public loses confidence that lawyers are being held to the standards the profession promises.
What Happened — A Clear Timeline
Complaint Filed: A detailed complaint was submitted to the LSA, supported by transcripts, court orders, RCMP correspondence, PN8 orders, and documentary evidence.
Initial Acknowledgment: The LSA confirmed receipt but took no investigative steps.
Fourteen Months of Form Letters: The LSA sent repeated, nearly identical emails stating the matter was “under review,” with no indication of progress.
No Disclosure: The Applicant was never told what submissions opposing counsel made.
No Participation: The Applicant was never given an opportunity to respond.
No Investigation: The Certified Record shows no interviews, no document requests, and no analysis.
Dismissal Without Reasons: After fourteen months, the LSA dismissed the complaint with no explanation.
Appeal Without Reasons: The internal appeal was dismissed, again without reasons.
Certified Record Confirms Everything: The record contains no evidence that the LSA reviewed or engaged with the complaint.
This is not a lawful or transparent process.
What We Are Asking For
We are calling for the Law Society of Alberta to adopt a fair, transparent, and accountable complaint‑handling process, including:
Meaningful investigations into serious complaints
Disclosure of evidence and submissions
An opportunity for complainants to respond
Reasoned decisions that explain outcomes

Documentation of investigative steps
These are basic standards of fairness — not special treatment.
