The Issue

Early this morning, I received alarming news that directly impacted people I know and care about. They were subjected to a traumatic and completely preventable incident—a bus crash (Osbourn Park High School Bus) that occurred due to the negligence and poor decision-making of the Prince William County Schools (PWCS) authorities. This incident took place during conditions that were evidently hazardous, given the snowfall and icy roads.

Multiple people I know personally crashed today with other damages and fines being prosecuted against young high school adults who did not deserve the struggle they were put through this morning. Along with this, multiple roads are currently closed leaving lots of students without a safe way of returning home, speculation of delayed busses this afternoon are also being discussed.

Other school counties were able to foresee the dangers that were going to unravel today yet PWCS made the imbecilic decision to push for school today.

The safety of students should always be the top priority for school administrations. This crash was not an unforeseen event; it was the result of inadequately assessed risks and a lack of appropriate precautions by the PWCS. Despite clear weather advisories indicating the dangers posed by snow and ice, the decision-makers failed to act responsibly and consequently risked the lives of vulnerable students and drivers.

Statistics show that road accidents increase by up to 70% during snowy conditions. According to the U.S. Federal Highway Administration, over 116,000 people are injured, and 1,300 lose their lives annually in vehicle crashes on snowy or icy roads. These figures should have guided the administrative decisions at PWCS to halt school transport until safe conditions were restored.

PWCS must take responsibility for allowing school buses to operate under such dangerous conditions. They must institute clear, actionable safety measures that prioritize the well-being of students and staff over all else. This includes reassessing weather protocols, improving communication, and implementing remote learning on days when weather advisories predict snow and ice hazards.

We call on the PWCS board to publicly address this incident and outline a plan to prevent future occurrences. Students' lives should never be compromised due to administrative oversights. It is critical that the school board demonstrates transparency, takes accountability, and actively works towards implementing preventative measures against inclement weather risks.

By signing this petition, you are urging the Prince William County Schools to take decisive action to safeguard our community's children. Stand with us to demand the accountability and protection our students deserve. Together, we can ensure that safety is prioritized over expediency. Please sign and share this petition now.
