The Issue

As a current student at IEM Kolkata, I am deeply concerned about recent policies that have affected our daily academic experience and general well-being. We, the students, have specific demands that deserve urgent attention from the administration to foster a healthier and more conducive learning environment.

First and foremost, we demand the elimination of Saturday classes. The current schedule is strenuous and leaves little room for relaxation and personal growth, hindering our academic performance and mental health. Establishing a fixed exit time at 4:15 PM for everyone is crucial for maintaining a healthy work-life balance, allowing students the necessary time to pursue extracurricular activities or personal interests.

Additionally, the current requirement for physical training (PT) uniforms and mandatory medical checkups feels less about student welfare and more about financial gain for the college under the guise of enforcing discipline. We propose that casual attire should be permitted at least once a week to foster a more comfortable and relaxed atmosphere that encourages genuine engagement in learning.

We also firmly believe that honors courses should not be imposed on Bachelor of Technology students. Academic pursuits are personal, and while honors may enhance a student's profile, they should remain optional to respect each individual's educational journey and personal aspirations.

Finally, accessible air-conditioning in all buildings, classrooms, and labs is not merely a luxury; it's a basic requirement in our educational environment. Proper climate control enhances concentration and learning efficiency, which is imperative in the high temperatures typical of our region.

These changes are essential not only for improving student life but also for preserving the institution's reputation as a committed educational establishment. By addressing these demands, IEM Kolkata can create a progressive environment that values its students and nurtures their potential.

We urge the administration to consider these points seriously and implement the proposed changes for the betterment of the student body as a whole. With your support, we can bring positive change to IEM Kolkata. Please sign this petition to stand with us in our call for academic reform.
