The current system of the Electoral College in the United States has proven to be problematic for a number of reasons. First, it means that votes in swing states have more weight than those in "safe" states, contributing to a sense of voter disenfranchisement and lower voter turnout. Second, the practice of redistricting has shown that the Electoral College can be manipulated, creating a further disconnect between the will of the people and the ultimate election results. Most startlingly, the Electoral College system allows for the possibility of a candidate winning the most individual votes nationwide (popular vote) but still losing the election. This has happened in five U.S. presidential elections so far, with the most recent being the 2016 election, where Hillary Clinton received 2.87 million more votes than Donald Trump nationwide, yet lost the election due to the distribution of Electoral College votes. It's time for all American citizens to have their voices genuinely heard. Let's advocate for a system switch to the popular vote, ensuring equal weight to all votes.
