The City of Rockingham has introduced changes to waste collection set to begin by the end of June 2025. With the new Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) service, bin collections change as follows: green-lidded FOGO bin (weekly), red-lidded general waste bin (fortnightly), and yellow-lidded recycling bin (fortnightly). This new schedule affects many residents, especially larger families who generate more waste in a shorter period. While the objective to reduce landfill waste is commendable, this service must also consider the lifestyle and needs of all residents. We need a service that is both environmentally conscious and practical for different types of households. According to a study by the Department of Environment and Energy, better waste management systems could reduce greenhouse gas emissions, yet also remain user-friendly (2018). Therefore, we uphold the City of Rockingham to reassess and revise their waste collection service to achieve this balance. Stand with us in advocating for a greener, yet practical city.
