Demand a Referendum on Raleigh City Council's Term Extension

The Issue

As a resident of Raleigh, I was deeply concerned when I learned that our City Council had voted to extend their term length from 2 years to 4 years without seeking the consent of the people they represent. This decision was made during the week of May 5th through 11th, and it was passed with a vote of 5-2. What is even more alarming is that they rejected the proposal to allow this change to be decided by us, the citizens, in a referendum vote in November.

Last year, a survey found that only 40% of Raleigh residents supported four-year terms while half did not. This clearly shows that there is no consensus on this issue among us. Yet our democratically elected officials have chosen to extend their terms without our democratic consent.

There are concerns about longer terms reducing accountability of elected officials towards their constituents. It's essential for democracy that we hold our elected representatives accountable and ensure they truly represent our interests.

We need your help now more than ever! By gathering at least 5000 signatures of residents from the city of Raleigh on this petition, we can force a referendum vote in November and let all citizens decide whether or not city council seats should have four-year terms.
