Demand a reconsideration of the plan to redesign Culligan Plaza in downtown Alpena, MI
The Issue
The purpose of this petition is to halt the Culligan Plaza remodel project in order for alternative design ideas to be submitted and presented to the people of Alpena for their consideration. The general consensus is disapproval of erecting an illuminated glass tower, which is completely out of place. Culligan Plaza is the heart of downtown Alpena. It currently houses some seating, established trees, historical lighting and a fountain with subterranean seating designed approximately 40-50 years ago. The city of Alpena has approved a $320K plan using funds from COVID relief, a youth recreation fund, and a private foundation to remove the current fountain (replacing it with a smaller one) and constructing a glass and steel interior-lit obelisk in it's place. While we agree that access to seating around the current fountain is not ADA compliant and we understand the desire for updating this public space, the city should not approve a design that has so much opposition from the townspeople.
