The Issue

On Tuesday morning, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo left his home in Houston looking for workers to hire. By 6:50am, he was dead — shot in the abdomen by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent during a traffic stop. His son, Ronaldo Salgado, wants answers. So do we.

ICE says Salgado Araujo "weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer." They provided no evidence to support this account. That matters, because this is not the first time ICE has made this claim. Renee Good was killed in Minneapolis. Two Venezuelan men were shot in Oregon. A California driver was fired upon during a traffic stop. In each case, the government said the victim weaponized their vehicle. In each case, video evidence contradicted that account.

Local witnesses captured footage of this shooting. That footage must be preserved and reviewed. The FBI is now leading the investigation, but an FBI investigation controlled by the same federal government that employs ICE is not independence.

The Texas Civil Rights Project and Representative Sylvia Garcia have already called for full transparency and an impartial accounting. We join that demand.

We call on the Department of Justice, the FBI, and Congress to ensure a fully independent investigation into this shooting, with all footage, communications, and evidence made public. Our neighborhoods are not battlegrounds.
