Demand a feasibility study for city water and sewer in Wequetequock
The Issue
DNA testing in 2025 revealed a concerning issue in Wequetequock Village: human wastewater has infiltrated our ground water and has been found in 10% of wells tested. This discovery highlights a serious problem with local septic systems, which are no longer viable to serve our community safely. Based on public records 90 septic systems are beyond their useful life, 15 systems are installed on filled marsh, and 5 systems are close to open water. The 2025 DNA testing was conducted to find the source of the high bacteria levels detected every year since 2009. All 29 samples tested found high levels of human DNA. The Town of Stonington, Connecticut, was informed of the risk to Wequetequock drinking water in 2023 after bacteria was initially discovered in 5 wells. The risk to public health and the environment has been ignored for too long.
The Town of Stonington, Connecticut, has been informed of the 2025 DNA findings and has a duty to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents. Implementing City Water and City Sewer services in Wequetequock Village could provide a long-term solution to this pressing issue. However, before such infrastructure improvements can be made, a comprehensive feasibility study must be funded and conducted to determine the costs and logistics involved.
Installing City Water and Sewer systems will address the contamination of our water supply, safeguard public health, and increase property values in the community. For residents with currently potable wells, City Water will provide a safe option in the event that contaminated ground water spreads and affects their wells. It also provides a solution for several properties whose water has salt water intrusion.
This petition urges the local government to take decisive action by conducting a feasibility study to assess the financial implications and practicalities of extending City Water and Sewer services to Wequetequock Village. By supporting this initiative, you are advocating for a safer, healthier, and sustainable future for all residents.
Wequetequock Village cannot afford to wait any longer. The time for action is now. Let us come together to ensure that our community has access to safe and clean drinking water, while protecting our natural resources for future generations.
Sign this petition to demand that the Town of Stonington prioritizes the health and safety of Wequetequock residents by initiating a feasibility study for City Water and Sewer immediately!
