Justice for Siddharth Sharma - killed in Civil Lines, Delhi in a hit and run

The Issue

Siddharth Sharma, a 32 year old man, was killed by a speeding Mercedes car, driven by a 17 year old at 8.45 pm on 4th April 2016, in Civil Lines, Delhi.

CCTV footage of the accident clearly shows Siddharth exercising caution while crossing the road, but the car, which was at very high speed, was no match for Siddharth's legs or reflexes. He was flung 10 - 15 feet in the air and succumbed to his grievous injuries later in the hospital. The car went over the pavement and with burst tires, came to a halt, a short distance away. 6-7 people emerged from the car, abandoned it and ran away.

Despite having taken custody of the car, and tracing the name and address of the owner who resides just 200 meters from the accident spot, the police did not make any attempt to arrest anyone. At the time, there was no proof that the driver was actually a minor and neither was there any proof that he was not driving under the influence.

Siddharth's friends and family have literally been going door to door to get some additional information or evidence and have been stone-walled.

The family has not shown remorse of any kind and have in fact tried to weasel their way out by first presenting their car driver to take responsibility for the incident. When the driver learnt of Siddharth's death, he quickly retracted his statement

The family has been trying to throw their weight and to buy their way out, legally exploiting every loop hole in the system their lawyers tell them about.

We want justice for Siddharth and responsibility has to be fixed for the following key lapses;

No action has been taken against the father who handed over the car keys to his son, the weapon with which the murder was committed

Delhi Police did not make any effort of their own accord, to recover CCTV footage from private cameras pointing at, and in the general vicinity of, the accident spot

Delhi Police failed to conduct any tests to ascertain whether the driver was under the influence or not, and in fact swung into action more than 24 hours later - too late to check for the presence of substances in the driver's body

CCTV footage was available in the hands of private persons, and was deliberately withheld. Delhi police have failed to take any action against them

We now want that;

The driver be immediately checked for any drug / alcohol use that may reveal levels of three days back

The identity of the other passengers in the car should be established and they should also be questioned to ascertain any drug / alcohol use before the accident

Action should be taken against those that have not withheld crucial CCTV footage

The driver of the car should be treated and tried as an adult and a murderer, he was clearly old enough for his parents to allow him access to drive the car independently, which itself is an adult's job. He has snatched the life of an innocent person who was merely crossing the road, and just because he turns 18 years of age in 2, 3, 4 or 8 days does not make him any less of an adult

An example should be set to ensure that the sickening repetition of these incidents stop. Juveniles/minors are committing crimes with impunity while our laws struggle to keep up with the times. The laws governing road accidents need immediate revamp with strict punishment and the offense needs to be non-bailable. Offenders get out on bail and use the opportunity to buy, threaten, and influence key witnesses

Mob activism has become the only means of getting something done in this country, and Delhi Police needs to understand that their days of corruption and inaction are over. The current generation of Indians have had enough

Siddharth is no longer with us, and nothing can bring him back but please sign the petition and contribute to making India a safer and more secure place to live.
