The Issue
Spring has sprung and so has construction at the Food Bank of Delaware's future home at 222 Lake Drive in Newark. We are proud of the time spent on value engineering to ensure that we have reduced costs as much as possible and designed a facility that will meet our needs well into the future.
Our team is working hard to raise the money needed to retrofit the facility. To date we have raised $4.3 million and need an additional $6 million. We are prepared to take out a bank loan, but we prefer to purchase bags full of food for kids participating in our Backpack Program than to pay interest on a loan for construction costs.
The sale of our current facility at 14 Garfield Way will bring in approximately $2 million, and we are working hard to secure money from the State of Delaware. In December 2017, we sent Governor Carney a letter requesting a one-time $1 million investment in this vital project.
Our intention is to ensure that this new facility serves as a continuation of our view that the issue of food security is an essential part of the solution on the issues of health and wellness, poverty, children's school performance, education and criminal justice reform. Food security should always be viewed as an important aspect of solving the problems identified, not just as a fleeting thought after they have been discussed.
In order to successfully secure this one time investment, we are asking for your help.
Please sign our petition to the members of the Delaware State House, Delaware State Senate, and specifically those on the Capital Improvements (Bond) committee, and request that they support the Food Bank of Delaware's important $1 million ask.
