Last night, the DeKalb County Board officially approved an ordinance to lower the speed limit from 55 to 45 mph for the stretch of Plank Road just south of Moose Range and including the sharp curve at Moose Range Road. It's a positive step in beginning to make Plank a safer road for everyone who uses it. The Highway Department said to look for new signage to be in place within the next couple weeks.
We are still looking to get extended no passing zones at least our intersections if not for the length of Plank Rd. in the petition. We are also asking for the speed limit to be lowered to 45 mph for that stretch of Plank. Through a FOIA request from the Sheriff's Department, we learned that in the last 3 years, 12 citations were issued from speed 26-34 mph over and 5 citations for 35+ mph over the speed limit. This is what is compelling us to ask for a reduction in the speed limit. Plank is a rural 2-lane road with neighborhoods and folks trying to get to school, work and the grocery store safely. There are many more instances of reckless driving that occur when an officer isn't posted on Plank.
Citizens for a Safer Plank Road continues to make public statements at the county board and highway committee meetings with our concerns and suggestions on steps towards improvements. Anyone is welcome to join us to at these meetings if you want to voice your concerns or opinions. We are expanding our outreach to state officials who may be able to help support our change requests at their level.
Folks are continuing to share this petition and we are still gathering paper petition signatures at various businesses around the community. We've surpassed 2,300!!!
Thanks so much for your support and spreading the word!
