DeFlock Philly
The Issue
In the vibrant city of Philadelphia, the sense of community and collective spirit has always been our strength. From its historic streets to its bustling neighborhoods, Philadelphia thrives on the strength of its people and their resilience in the face of adversity. However, since May 2024, our city's privacy and liberty have been steadily eroding due to the introduction of flock cameras.
These surveillance cameras have been installed across Philadelphia with little to no input from its residents, and their presence is palpable. They watch our every move, capturing details of our routines, our commutes, and our lives without our consent. The justification of increased safety doesn't hold up to scrutiny – instead, we face the unsettling reality of being constantly monitored in our own city, eroding the trust between citizens and authorities.
Evidence suggests that surveillance technology of this scale doesn't necessarily lead to a decrease in crime, but rather, compromises our right to privacy. Numerous studies have pointed out that the broad implementation of such surveillance tools often leads to data misuse, racial profiling, and infringement on civil liberties. Furthermore, the data collected by these cameras is susceptible to breaches, risking sensitive information falling into the wrong hands.
Philadelphia deserves better. We demand transparency and accountability from our city officials. Before implementing technologies that drastically impact our lives, there should be a comprehensive review involving public consultations, clear regulations on data use, and strict security measures to protect residents' privacy.
We are calling on city leaders to remove these intrusive flock cameras from our streets. Let's work together to find alternative solutions that truly enhance safety without sacrificing our civil rights. Safety and security should not come at the cost of privacy and trust.
Join us in urging the Philadelphia City Council and Mayor to prioritize our privacy rights. Stand with us and sign this petition to remove flock cameras from Philadelphia today.
