The Issue

Living in Longview, Texas has taught me the true value of privacy and the ways it impacts our day-to-day lives. In our own homes, we deserve to feel safe and free from unnecessary intrusion. Yet, the increasing presence of surveillance technology in residential areas is threatening this fundamental right, making many of us feel constantly monitored in what should be our private sanctuaries.

The local government's initiative to install more security cameras and provide access to drone surveillance in public and selective private spaces, under the guise of community safety, is going too far. These actions are undermining our trust in the system and unnecessarily infringing on our personal lives.

Statistics indicate that while surveillance can deter crime to some extent, it has not significantly reduced crime rates in neighborhoods with heavy camera presence. This raises the question: are we sacrificing our personal freedoms without tangible benefits in safety?

What we need is a balanced approach that respects our privacy. Instead of ramping up surveillance, Longview should invest in community-building initiatives and support neighborhood watch programs that foster trust and cooperation among residents.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for an approach that respects individual privacy while ensuring safety through community engagement, not invasive surveillance measures. Please join us in urging the Longview City Council to revisit their current surveillance strategy and take action that truly reflects the values and needs of its residents.
