PRONUNCIAMIENTO DE TRABAJADORXS DEL ARTE PERUANXS

Ante los graves actos de presión política a artistas en nuestro país, hacemos público lo siguiente:

Las elecciones han polarizado al país, al punto de quebrarse normas democráticas básicas, como demuestran los probados intentos en empresas de coaccionar el voto de lxs trabajadorxs. Casos similares han ocurrido con numerosxs artistas presionadxs privada y públicamente para optar por una candidatura, vía redes sociales y llamadas telefónicas. Inclusive se ha celebrado la elaboración de listas para boicotear carreras de artistas. Esta violencia ejercida por agentes vinculados a instituciones, al coleccionismo y el comercio de arte, ha mostrado en algunos casos clasismo y racismo, equiparando una posición política determinada con el terrorismo. Estas acciones buscan condicionar la carrera de artistas según su orientación política, sembrando el miedo y promoviendo el silencio.

Como comunidad artística, rechazamos firmemente la coacción del libre ejercicio de sufragio y demandamos una reflexión colectiva sobre la vocación democrática que deberían tener las instituciones artísticas locales, públicas y privadas. Creemos necesario que ellas mantengan un espíritu plural y deslinden claramente de esas actitudes, asumiendo responsablemente su rol en la sociedad. Como artistas y ciudadanxs debemos denunciar todo intento de violentar el respeto a la libertad de opinión, esencia del acto creativo y de la vida en comunidad. Si no queremos vivir en dictadura, es contradictorio recurrir a comportamientos autoritarios como la coerción, el abuso de poder y la supresión de la libertad de expresión.

El arte puede cumplir mejor su función mediadora entre culturas y contextos heterogéneos, si artistas, curadorxs, críticxs, galeristas, coleccionistas, y otros agentes trabajan colaborativamente. Ver más allá de nuestros círculos sociales, buscando herramientas de diálogo y entendimiento, es una de las tareas que estas elecciones nos dejan como comunidad artística y como país. Las crisis sanitaria, económica y política, nos convocan a trabajar en busca del bien común, reflejando el cambio que queremos para el Perú. Es decir, anteponer los intereses comunes a los particulares, para crear una esfera pública digna de un país en donde todas las opiniones, deseos y formas de ver el mundo tengan la misma legitimidad y valor.

ART WORKERS OF PERU STATEMENT

Given the serious acts of political pressure on artists in our country, we make the following public:

The elections have polarized the country, to the point of breaking basic democratic norms, as demonstrated by the proven attempts by companies to coerce the vote of workers. Similar cases have occurred with numerous artists pressured privately and publicly, via social media and phone calls, to opt for a particular candidate. Lists have even been made to boycott artists' careers. This violence exercised by agents linked to institutions, collecting and the art trade, has in some cases shown classism and racism, equating a specific political position with terrorism. These actions seek to condition the career of artists according to their political orientation, sowing fear and promoting silence.

As an artistic community, we firmly reject the coercion of the right to vote and demand a collective reflection on the democratic vocation that local, public and private artistic institutions should have. We believe it is necessary for them to maintain a clearly defined pluralistic spirit, accepting responsibility for their role in society. As artists and citizens we must denounce any attempt to violate respect for freedom of opinion, the essence of the creative act and life in community. If we do not want to live in a dictatorship, it is contradictory to resort to authoritarian behaviours such as coercion, abuse of power and the suppression of freedom of expression.

Art can best fulfil its mediating function between heterogeneous cultures and contexts, if artists, curators, critics, gallery owners, collectors, and other agents work collaboratively. One of the tasks that these elections leave us with is to see beyond our social circles and seek tools for dialogue and understanding, as an artistic community and as a country. The health, economic and political crises call us to work in search of the common good, reflecting the change we want for Peru. That is, putting common interests before individuals, to create a public sphere worthy of a country where all opinions, desires and ways of seeing the world have the same legitimacy and value.
