Defenders Of Childhood

The Issue

T

To the Lawmakers of the United Kingdom:

We, the undersigned, stand united in demanding stronger protections for children and young adults from online exploitation and abuse. Recent years have shown alarming increases in online child predation, and we believe urgent legislative action is required to safeguard our nation’s youth. We call on Parliament to enact laws that reflect the severity of these crimes, deter future offenders, and hold predators accountable.

Specifically, we demand the following legal reforms:

Minimum Sentences for Child Predators:
One Contact, Five Years: Any individual contacting a child with exploitative intent should face a minimum prison sentence of 5 years upon the first message.
Additional Sentencing for Continued Offenses: For each additional message or communication, we call for an additional year of imprisonment to fully reflect the magnitude of harm that prolonged contact causes.
Prohibition of Reduced Sentencing: Sentences should not be reduced through plea bargaining or other judicial allowances for offenders convicted of child exploitation.
Raising the Age of Consent:
New Age of Consent: We advocate for an increase in the legal age of consent to 18, ensuring that young individuals are protected until they reach adulthood. This measure acknowledges the developmental vulnerabilities of young people and provides greater legal safeguards.
Consideration of Further Protections for Ages 18-21: For individuals aged 18-21, we propose continued protections against exploitation by much older adults. This "protected age" status would allow young adults greater legal security while navigating early adulthood.
Why This Is Necessary:

In the UK, thousands of online child exploitation cases are reported annually. Yet, current sentencing often fails to reflect the lasting impact of such crimes on young lives, and predators continue to exploit legal loopholes to harm our children. Additionally, the age of consent does not fully protect teenagers from manipulative adult behavior, leaving them vulnerable to predation and exploitation.

We Urge Immediate Action:

Protecting children and young adults must be a priority. We call upon Parliament to put these minimum sentencing laws and age of consent reforms into effect without delay. Together, these actions will not only deter future offenses but will ensure that offenders face penalties that reflect the true gravity of their crimes.

By signing this petition, we affirm our commitment to a safer future for the UK’s youth and demand the implementation of these reforms.
