Jackie, the bald eagle who became a worldwide icon through the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam, died this week from severe anemia after weeks of veterinary care at the Ojai Raptor Center.

She was rescued in July, grounded and unable to fly after clashing with two younger eagles. Despite oxygen therapy and a full veterinary team's efforts, she never recovered.

For more than a decade, hundreds of thousands of people watched Jackie and her mate, Shadow, raise six eaglets from their Big Bear Valley nest. The livestream, run by the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley, turned two wild eagles into a daily ritual for millions of strangers around the world.

"It has been an extraordinary privilege to care for her," the Ojai Raptor Center said in the statement announcing her death.

Jackie's story doesn't have to end here. Shadow remains in the territory, and other eagles have already been spotted nearby, meaning this nest could keep raising chicks for years if the habitat around it stays protected. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, both already investigating what happened to Jackie, should commit to protecting the Big Bear Valley nesting territory and to backing the nest cam's education program, so it can keep introducing new eagles to new generations of fans.
