Hi everyone,
It’s time to take a back seat and let others carry the conversation now. I originally started this petition thinking Alan Jones’ ugly bullying for an ugly cause was pretty rank, and thought others might agree. I wanted to shine a light on it. I think we’ve thoroughly achieved that.
Because now we know just how many people do agree. As the sails were lit above a 1000-strong crowd of protesters, your petition rolled over three hundred thousand signatures.
You showed Alan Jones and Racing NSW that Louise Herron doesn’t stand alone in defending the Opera House.
Together, we started a debate about how our public buildings should be used – even making it an election issue, with opposition leader Bill Shorten saying it should never happen again; and wouldn’t under a Labor government.
And we reminded the nation that some things aren’t for profit, and that money isn’t the final reason for everything.
But most of all, you stood shoulder to shoulder, three hundred thousand strong, and gave those with money, power, and both sides of politics a wake-up call. They all know now that next time, there’s not just one public official, but at least another three hundred thousand people to get through first.
And if they ever try to pull this kind of thing again, we’ll all be right here.
