Defend Freedom of Expression: Justice for Samay Raina, Focus on Real Issues
The Issue
Freedom of speech is a constitutional right — and that includes the right to offend.
In a democratic society, comedians like Samay Raina play a crucial role in highlighting societal issues through satire and dark humor. In his stand-up special Narak, Samay commented on the exorbitant cost of a ₹16 crore injection — a joke meant to expose the brutal inaccessibility of life-saving treatment in India.
This is not a crime. It’s a reflection of the harsh realities many Indians face every day.
Now, in connection with the India’s Got Latent controversy involving YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia (BeerBiceps), Samay’s old videos are being dragged into legal scrutiny. The court is now criticizing his comedy, especially his dark humour about medical treatments and disabilities. One of his videos was taken as “offensive” by a SMA foundation, where Samay made a satirical joke:
“Ma’am, you tell me… if you were that mother and one day ₹16 crore appeared in your bank account, while you had a 2-month-old, wouldn’t you at least look at your husband once and say... ‘Hmm, inflation is rising?’”
This was satire, not hate. He wasn’t mocking the sick, he was mocking the system. A system where the cost of living — quite literally — is out of reach for the average Indian.
Meanwhile, where is the same energy for real, ongoing tragedies and problems?
- Murshidabad Violence (April 2025): Reports indicate targeted attacks on Hindu homes — marked and burned — during protests over a land law. No court took urgent suo motu action. (Read about it here)
- RG Kar Medical College Case (August 2024): The brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor led to nationwide protests, highlighting systemic failures in ensuring safety for women. Justice still drags on. (International news coverage regarding the RG Kar Case)
- KIIT University Incident (February 2025): The tragic death of Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal, allegedly due to harassment, sparked diplomatic tensions between India and Nepal. Still — no major legal movement. (Article by the Kathmandu Post)
These are real crises. These are the things the courts and institutions should be focused on.
We urge the authorities to:
- Recognize the role of satire and dark humor as legitimate tools of social commentary.
- Protect freedom of expression so artists can critique injustice without fear.
- Prioritize real justice over outrage trials targeting comedians.
Samay Raina has been a voice of reason, a source of relief, and a sharp critic of systemic absurdities. Silencing him sends the wrong message about what India values.
Stand with Samay Raina. Stand for reason. Stand for free expression.
