The U.S. Supreme Court just upheld a Texas law requiring users to verify their age before accessing adult websites—a decision that opens the door for other states to demand the same. While protecting minors is vital, this ruling threatens the privacy and free expression of millions of adults online.

Requiring people to submit government IDs or personal data to access legal content creates a chilling effect on speech and sets a dangerous precedent. Who we are and what we choose to view online should not be subject to government surveillance or corporate data harvesting. The risk of hacking, misuse, and censorship is simply too high.

We call on Congress to enact clear federal protections that safeguard adults' digital rights while still supporting efforts to keep children safe. There are better ways to do both—without forcing people to hand over sensitive information just to access constitutionally protected content.
