Decriminalize Street Vendors and Allow Late Night Food Sales in Santa Barbara

The Issue

As a resident of Santa Barbara, I have experienced firsthand the struggles of finding employment during the Covid-19 pandemic. After losing my job as a cook at an upscale country club, I turned to street vending to make ends meet. However, the current regulations in Santa Barbara make it difficult for individuals like myself to operate legally and sustainably.

I am petitioning for the decriminalization of food street vendors and the allowance of late-night food sales from 9pm to 3am in Santa Barbara county. This will not only provide economic opportunities for locals but also enhance our community's cultural diversity.

Currently, street vending is considered a misdemeanor offense in many areas of California, including Santa Barbara. This criminalization disproportionately affects low-income individuals who rely on street vending as their primary source of income. By decriminalizing street vending, we can create more equitable economic opportunities for all members of our community.

Additionally, allowing late-night food sales will benefit both vendors and consumers. Many people work late hours or enjoy nightlife activities that extend beyond traditional business hours. Allowing vendors to operate during these times will provide them with additional income while also meeting consumer demand.

According to a study by UCLA Labor Center, legalizing street vending could generate up to $500 million annually statewide and create thousands of jobs. Furthermore, cities such as Los Angeles have already implemented successful programs that regulate and support street vendors while ensuring public safety.

Therefore, I urge local officials in Santa Barbara county to take action towards decriminalizing food street vendors and allowing late-night food sales from 9pm-3am. Let us embrace our diverse culinary traditions while supporting local entrepreneurs who are struggling during these challenging times.

Thank you for your consideration,
