Apostasy, or the abandonment of one's religious beliefs, should never be a crime, and yet, in several countries around the world, individuals who decide to leave Islam are faced with severe repercussions, including imprisonment, social ostracization, and even the death penalty. This unjust practice violates basic human rights and freedoms.
According to the Pew Research Center, as of 2020, more than a dozen countries, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, still impose harsh penalties on those accused of apostasy. These laws are not only a violation of international human rights agreements, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which protects the freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, but also contribute to an atmosphere of fear and repression.
Decriminalizing apostasy is not merely a necessity for the individuals directly affected, but it is imperative for fostering true religious freedom and diversity. It promotes a society where individuals can express their beliefs freely and engage in open dialogues without fear of retribution.
