As you may have seen, last week the ACT passed legislation further decriminalising cannabis use in the territory and made international headlines in doing so. The Federal Government meantime is firmly opposed and is looking at how the new law can be thwarted.
Whilst we at United In Compassion aren't about recreational cannabis (and hold no particular view on it), the ACT's move is nonetheless really important.
Why? Because the ACT just happens to have one of the lowest per capita approval rates for medicinal cannabis anywhere in Australia (at just 1.8 people per 100,000) so for many people, the new law will provide the only option to access their medicines legally.
While I don't mind either way whether recreational use is permitted, I do mind that most sick Australians who need legal access to such medicine can't get it - largely because of deliberate misinformation driven by elected representatives and some corners of health industry.
Therefore - as we continue to push hard for a much sought-after public inquiry into the dire state of patient access - I'm asking if you could do one of the following:
1. Please consider donating to our GoFundMe - we have great plans but will need people's help to realise them;
2. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter - we're working all the time to get medicinal cannabis moving in Australia and these are great ways to keep up to date with what's happening;
3. If you think medicinal cannabis might be for you or your loved ones, talk to your doctor about it. To help, we've produced a great 'Patient Guide' which can be downloaded free from our website. Take a look, and, as importantly, please ask your doctor read it;
4. Please keep sharing this petition. Canberra is listening, and at around 404,000 names & growing, we can ensure we remain on their radar.
Thanks so much for your help - it really is greatly appreciated.
Lucy
