Decrease Maternal Mortality Rates Among Black Women in the United States.

Decrease Maternal Mortality Rates Among Black Women in the United States.
The Issue
According to the CDC and the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Black women in the U.S. face almost three times the maternal mortality rate of white women regardless of income level, insurance type, or any other social driver of health. It is unconscious bias and systemic racism within healthcare that drives this stat.
"When Black women speak up during childbirth, they're silenced. When they plead for help, they're dismissed. This isn't neglect; it's a direct reflection of how society values our lives."
- Kimberlé Crenshaw, Scholar and co-founder of the #SayHerName campaign
This egregious issue demands immediate attention and action. We call upon policymakers and the United States government to address and actively work towards mitigating the racial disparities in maternal health by addressing the following:
Implement Implicit Bias Training:
Require implicit bias training for all healthcare providers involved in maternal care. This training will help reduce the impact of systemic racism and improve the quality of care provided to Black mothers.
Support the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act:
Pass and fully fund the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act, which includes comprehensive measures to address maternal health disparities and improve outcomes for Black mothers.
Ensure Fair Compensation for Doula Services:
Doulas must be paid an equitable reimbursement wage through both private and Medicaid insurance, with a minimum global reimbursement rate of $3,000 USD. This acknowledges the vital, life-saving role doulas play in maternal care and affirms the dignity of their work.
Include Community-Based Experts in Maternal Health Policy:
BIPOC-led organizations and doulas must be recognized as subject matter experts and included at every level of policy-making, especially when drafting legislation for doula reimbursement or in lieu of services (ILOS). Representation ensures relevance and prevents further harm.
By signing this petition, you contribute to a more significant movement to ensure safe and equitable healthcare for all mothers in the United States, regardless of race. Please sign the petition today. Let's fight against systemic racism and protect the lives of Black mothers.
