Decrease Cost of living and poverty in Northampton
The Issue
As students currently undertaking oir GCSE project of cost of living and poverty I've delved into the pressing issue many of us face in Northampton: the mismatch between rising taxes and stagnant wages. The challenging economic environment is a reality affecting countless families in our community, including my own. It is not uncommon to hear stories of parents working multiple jobs just to make ends meet, and still finding it difficult to cover basic living expenses due to increasing tax burdens without a corresponding rise in wages.
Recent data indicates that while the UK average wage has seen a modest percentage increase over the years, taxes, notably council taxes and national insurance contributions, have risen at a disproportionately faster rate. According to the Office for National Statistics, the average tax burden as a percentage of GDP has grown significantly, impacting household disposable income. This data strongly suggests the crucial necessity for wage adjustments that align with tax increases.
In Northampton, where living costs are continuously climbing, the absence of wage growth only exacerbates the financial strain on residents. By not adjusting wages to reflect these changes, we risk broad societal issues such as increased debts, growing reliance on social welfare, and a general decline in quality of life for many.
Therefore, we are calling on local authorities, business leaders, and policymakers to institute measures that ensure wages in Northampton grow alongside tax increases. This can be approached by indexing minimum wages to tax rises, advocating for living wage adjustments, and incentivizing businesses to provide salary growth aligned with inflation and tax changes.
By taking these steps, we can all strive towards a fairer society where the hard work of Northampton's citizens is not undermined by financial hurdles.
