Halton Regional Council Calls on Ministry of Health to Address Shortage of Midwifery Services in Milton

Motion moved by Councillor Sameera Ali and His Worship, Milton Mayor Gordon Krantz Receives Unanimous Vote to Support the Health and Well-being of Milton Mothers and Babies.

Please add your name to this important Declaration of Support!

We, the undersigned, urgently appeal to the Ministry of Health to address the critical shortage of midwifery services in Milton, Ontario—one of Canada’s fastest-growing communities. The pressing situation at Hawthorne Midwives highlights a larger crisis affecting maternal health services in our community.

The Crisis: Hawthorne Midwives, currently operating at overcapacity, has been forced to turn away 1,848 expectant mothers since 2018, including 460 in 2023 alone. This shortage not only compromises the well-being of expectant mothers but also places unsustainable pressure on our dedicated midwifery staff, risking burnout and affecting the quality of care.

The Solution: Hawthorne Midwives has proposed a practical and essential expansion plan for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, which includes hiring two experienced midwives and two recent graduates. This plan will increase our capacity to support at least 280 additional clients annually, ensuring continuous, holistic care for our community's growing number of expectant mothers.

Call to Action: We urge immediate action from local community leaders and the Ministry of Health. Your support is so important. By signing this Declaration of Support, you are voicing your concern and helping to develop sustainable healthcare operations that keep pace with Milton’s expanding needs.

Your Support Will Make a Difference:

We call on the Ministry of Health to conduct a swift review of midwifery services in Milton.

Our community's strength lies in its unity and compassion.

Stand with us, sign the Declaration of Support, and ensure that every mother and child in Milton receives the care and support they need during one of the most important times of their lives.

Thank you for your support and solidarity.

Hawthorne Midwives - Creating Families, Nurturing Lives.

Hawthorne Midwives celebrated their 1000th baby born on March 19! Newly elected Milton MPP Zee Hamid came by to congratulate the team and Hawthorne Midwives, and we congratulated him on his electoral win.
