The Issue

Twenty-two years ago, on September 11, 2001, the world watched in horror as unthinkable acts of terrorism unfolded on American soil. It was a day that changed our lives forever, touching the hearts of millions and leaving indelible marks on those directly impacted. For my family, the tragedy hit close to home. My husband’s cousin was in New York City that fateful day, and much of our family resides there, experiencing the aftermath firsthand.

September 11 is more than a day of remembrance; it's a moment to honor the resilience and unity of our nation in the face of adversity. It is a time to recognize the extraordinary courage displayed by countless first responders, the lives lost, and the families forever altered by the events of that day. By establishing 9/11 as a national holiday, we ensure that the heroism, sacrifice, and strength witnessed remain etched in our collective memory.

Across the nation, monuments commemorate the memory of that day and its impact. Millions of people participate in memorial ceremonies and moments of silence. Still, without official recognition as a national holiday, the risk of fading respect and awareness rises with each passing year. This day should be preserved not only through memorials but also through national acknowledgment and reflection.

Naming September 11 as a national holiday will provide citizens the opportunity to fully engage in acts of remembrance and community solidarity annually. It will empower educational institutions to teach future generations about the events, significance, and lessons of 9/11. Furthermore, businesses and workplaces can use the time to promote volunteer service and community engagement in honor of those lost.

Congress has the ability to enact legislation that would officially designate September 11 as a national holiday. Such a powerful move would send a message of enduring unity and determination, ensuring the spirit of those brave souls will not be forgotten.

Join me in calling on our leaders to recognize the significance of September 11 by declaring it a national holiday. By doing so, we allow our nation to remember, reflect, and unite in honoring the legacy of resilience that defines us.
