Declare Police Killings a Hate Crime and demand Stricter Penalties in South Africa
The Issue
As a wife of a serving member of the South African Police Services, I have seen first-hand the devastating impact that violence against our officers has. Over the last decade, we have lost too many friends to murder, including a Captain from our local precinct on Sunday 19 November 2023.
No police wife, son, daughter, mother, father, brother, sister or life partner, family member, friend or colleague should ever have to endure this pain.
Every day we send our loved ones out to serve and protect us but who is protecting them? The South African Government has failed our members miserably by not taking strong enough action against those who kill police officers.
KILLING A MEMBER OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE SERVICE MUST BE DECLARED A HATE CRIME!!!
We are calling on the South African Government to condemn these killings and pass a bill making it an act of treason and an attack on the state. Murdering a police officer should carry a MINIMUM mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.
According to Statistics South Africa (2019), there were 58 recorded murders of police officers in just one year. This is unacceptable and shows that current penalties are not enough deterrent for these heinous crimes.
In the second quarter of July to September 2023 35 THIRTY FIVE police members were murdered!!!
I will not stop at this, I will fight for every member, alive and taken too soon! I will fight this on behalf of every family member of the serving members!
The South African Police Wives and Partners Support Group will not rest until we have seen Government take us seriously!!!!
We need your support now more than ever. Stand with us as we demand justice for fallen officers and protection for those still serving. Sign this petition today!
