The Issue

Moments like this bring people together in a way nothing else does. Supporting Ireland has always been something I share with family and friends, and opportunities like a World Cup playoff are rare. I want everyone across the country to have the chance to experience that same sense of pride, unity, and togetherness, and to be free to celebrate a moment we may not see again for years. Therefore, I am calling on the Irish Government to make Friday, 27 March 2026, a once-off National Holiday.

This would allow people across Ireland to gather and support the Ireland Senior Men’s Team in the World Cup Qualification Playoff Semi-Final on the 26th. Being there in person not only boosts the morale of our team but also shows our national spirit and support. It is a chance for communities to come together, somehow transcending the ordinary flow of life to celebrate a potential historic sporting achievement.

Furthermore, if Ireland wins the semi-final, I urge the government to declare 31 March and 1 April as once-off holidays as well. These days would give the nation the opportunity to unite for the Playoff Final and, hopefully, celebrate a historic sporting victory that the entire country can rally around. Such seminal moments in sports history, which promote national pride and unity, deserve their own time and remembrance.

We have seen in other nations how sports can unify countries and create lifelong memories and bonds. Having the freedom to participate in this communal celebration without the restraint of everyday obligations would amplify the joy and significance.

Ireland's progress in football tournaments has historically brought waves of happiness and a unique collective experience. Let's give this generation, and those to follow, the opportunity to witness and feel the same pride we’ve cherished in past glorious moments.

I am urging everyone who feels the same way to join me in this appeal. Sign this petition to make sure that the Irish Government hears our collective voice and gives us all the chance to stand together and celebrate as one proud nation.
