Our country is getting ravaged by unprecedented fires - people are losing their lives, homes and livelihoods. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklain says this is not the time to talk about climate change - I disagree.
Please share the petition to declare a national climate emergency.
There is no doubt that the national priority right now is to keep people alive and salvage what we can. Yet, for those of us who can, we need to raise our voices right now about the inextricable link between climate change and these catastrophic weather events. Because, as retired NSW Fire & Rescue Commissioner, Greg Mullins, has said, “if not now, then when?”
Whether it’s the unseasonal bushfires in California or here, the commonality in these global events is that everyone agrees they are “unprecedented.” This is not part of a normal cycle. These fires aren’t like before. Our inaction on climate has established an unprecedented dry, warm climate that is responsible for the scale of destruction we are witnessing now.
Nationals leader Michael McCormack may be unhappy that “inner-city lefties” are raising climate change in relation to bushfires, but we need to do our bit to prevent these tragic weather events from becoming the “new normal.”
If you can, please continue sharing the petition in solidarity with our brothers and sisters battling fires across Australia. We need to be talking about the climate emergency today, so that we can take real action on it, before fires like this become the new normal.
