Declaration of the Bangalore Railway Cantonment Colony as a Biodiversity Heritage Site.

The Issue

This is for the people of Karnataka, Bangaloreans and Nation.

Public notice concerning the declaration of Bangalore Railway Cantonment Colony as a Biodiversity Heritage Site under Section 37(1) of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, and Rule 20 of the Karnataka Biological Diversity Rules, 2005, and Notification No: TEC/C02/CRCTrees/189/281 dated 01.09.2025 .

We wholeheartedly thank Honorable Environment Minister Shri Eshwar Bheemanna Khandre for considering our plea to declare Cantonment Railway Colony as Heritage site and save all 368 fully grown trees of the area.

As green cover of the city has shrunk significantly (from 70% to just 3%) in the last 50 years, this step will stop further destruction of green space and would serve as an example for active conservation possibilities.

Following are our suggestions
- Clear all the construction debris dumped in the area
- Remove plastic and other garbage from the site
- Construct a compound wall to avoid people from dumping garbage
- Do one time trimming of dry/dead branches off the trees
- Make contour trenches and swales to hold & absorb rain water of the area
- Remove old unusable structures from the site
- Plant fruit bearing saplings of native species in the empty space which should be friendly to birds, and other bio-diversity micro-organisms.
- Make a borewell to water new saplings in the Winter and Summer
- Plant different variety of flowering plants in between trees
- Create pathways to access most part of the space
- Put stone benches along the pathways for visitors to sit
- Create pathways to access temple of the premise without disturbing the plants
- Appoint caretakers and security guards. Involve local peoples or thru CSR to keep up BHS greenery, and develop one of the lung space of Bangalore
