Multnomah County Animal Services under Jackie Rose's leadership has lost its moral compass. Its annual end of year "bargain sale,” adopting shelter animals for the price of the day of the month, is announced as a jolly time to find a home for the holidays. It does come at the expense of animal welfare. It is a phony Olympics event for numbers profit.
The disclaimer used by Ms Rose is that the ASPCA research assures us that animals adopted out for free are just "as loved" as those adopted when fees apply. This is a game of smoke and mirrors. As demonstrated in a previous post, the research is flawed and limited in its generalizability. The label " free" is used to justify unconscionable government conduct. Borrowed for propaganda the research is music for lazy ears. It does not apply to MCAS shelter demographics and MCAS has done no research. When MCAS's primary way of raising numbers is giving away the inventory management is a failure.
MCAS has reached a new low, offering Kelso at a bargain rate despite a likely terminal medical condition, minimizing the severity of that condition, and suggesting a talk with the canine specialist who has no veterinary credentials. MCAS did no confirming diagnostics, did not utilize Dolly's Fund established for the medical needs of dogs whose care costs will be substantial, did not offer Kelso as a hospice foster, sought no medical rescues. Kelso was put him on fire sale status at a bargain rate, the price of that doggy in the window. Medical records with medical waiver attached (to escape from responsibility and public service).
In the past diagnostic costs were covered and also dogs like this placed in MCAS hospice foster.
Kelso, “This dog has a condition called masticatory myositis. Diagnostic testing was never performed but it is strongly suspected. [ The cost of the diagnostic test is $100-$260 easily covered by Dolly’s Fund set up for just such a purpose]) … attempting treatment may provide some improvement though it is unlikely to completely resolve it…. At some point, this condition may progress to a degree where his jaw will be closed too tightly to allow his tongue to stick through. If this happens he will be unable to eat or drink…It is unknown how soon this will happen, so an adopter will need to monitor …It is recommended for the adopter to discuss the care of this dog with their own veterinarian. Any future diagnostics or treatments are the responsibility of the adopter.”
“Shelter review met and recommends placing this dog for adoption with special promotion or transfer.”
Why hasn’t MCAS consult a veterinary specialist instead of shucking a consult onto an adopter? And why not a foster hospice? The answer is they just don’t care, they are busy clearing out the end of year inventory.
