Dear friend,

Here's a guide to achieving a sustainable world, by a campaigner and social entrepreneur focused on building a circular food economy.

In the latest video podcast episode of the School of Social Justice, I interview Josephine Liang, Co-Founder of CauliBox. CauliBox provides reusable lunch boxes to help create a circular food economy, and reduce plastic waste. She has worked as campaigner, and now uses the power of social entrepreneurship to address injustice.

When she was in Hong Kong, Josephine was granted a scholarship to study in India. There, she learned of the privileges she had. Upon reflection, she decided to take on responsibility, make the most of the opportunity, and give back. This value of service has stuck with her, and her character and ingenuity have led to real change.

In this interview, she challenges our views of who is to blame for climate change, and articulates how local and national governments, individuals, big businesses, and entrepreneurs can improve sustainability. Her life’s work thus far shows how different skills and initiatives and methods can all have different and necessary roles in chipping away at the injustices society faces. She points out a number of ways you, we, can make a small difference, a guide for those of us trying to figure out where to start.

Josephine is someone who epitomises what it means to be dedicated to a cause. She does not believe in grand gestures, and instead highlights the often unseen efforts behind the scenes that are quietly making a difference. Her attitude is: Everyone can play a small part in helping make the world fairer."

My two main lessons from this conversation are: (i) We must always remember the almighty power of the simple act of taking the first step, of drumming up the courage to take action, of the strength that can be found in saying no to the way things are; and, (ii) To achieve great things, you must first think of the smallest thing you can do. If not, the immensity and scale of the problem will be too large to address. Focus on a specific issue, faced by the people in your community, and figure out who else can help, what each of you can do best, then organise and execute.

Highlights:
- Did you know that food shops throw paint on unused food to stop dumpster divers?
- Do you know what the poverty premium is? It is a term that describes the fact that poorer people often have to pay more for the same services and products.
- The private, public, and third sectors must act together for long and deep progress.
