Dear signers,
This morning, I met Facebook’s Head of Policy for France and Europe. I delivered your signatures and comments and I talked to her about possible solutions to control jihadist propaganda on their platform.
I passed on the message many of you had conveyed after Facebook replied to our petition: We are well aware that you are already involved in the struggle against jihadism but we are expecting more from Facebook. We are expecting a strong committment that is essential as ISIS is spreading on social networks, especially on Facebook.
They listened to me thoughtfully and in good faith. I felt that the people from Facebook France really wanted to get involved in the fight against jihadist propaganda. They told me that they’ve worked every day for two years on this matter and that they are willing to give us an answer in the near future.
They told me: "Your petition fuels our work" and "These signatures will not just stay on our desk.”.
I submitted two propositions:
-To work on accelerating and polishing the moderation process for jihadist propaganda and other hateful comments in order to deactivate them faster and more efficiently. I gave them the example of a jihadist video shared to teenagers by a public figure on November 14. This video was seen, liked and shared a hundred times and is still online despite being reported many times.
-To create a lab/incubator in Paris which could be a trailblazer in this field. The idea would be to connect Facebook teams and legal experts but also “super users,” especially self-defense groups which are already active in reporting suspicious accounts or accounts that do not respect Facebook’s policies. The idea is to work with people who are willing to help to find concrete and efficient solutions.
The Facebook staff we talked to promised to consider these and any other solutions could support to our demands. They promised to come back to us quickly, not just with words but with strong propositions.
Even though I have confidence in Facebook’s willingness to move in the right direction, we have to stay engaged to demonstrate how urgent it is to tackle this issue and remind Facebook that this must remain a priority. We cannot forget that this fight is not only local, it is global. It is not limited to France. And it’s not about deleting content for French users only.
Please keep sharing this petition so that anyone can support our demands : www.change.org/MerciFacebook
Thank you all,
Julie
