Memorial University of Newfoundland's Political Science Undergraduate Society is standing in solidarity with its department's Visiting Assistant Professor, Dr. Mehmet Efe Caman. Dr. Caman is a highly valued member of Memorial's Department of Political Science who has had an immense impact on countless lives of students, fellow faculty members and administrative staff alike.

Dr. Caman is a scholar of international relations, a human rights activist, liberal democrat, and columnist. He is an academic from Turkey, a country which has consistently persecuted those in academia. In 2015, Dr. Caman came to Memorial University to do research and has called Newfoundland and Labrador his home ever sine.

On Feb 4, 2022, Dr. Caman announced via Twitter that he was contacted by Department Head Dr. Alex Marland, who was forwarding news from the Dean's office that Dr. Caman's term contract which expires at the end of April 2022 would not be renewed. In his tweets, Dr. Caman states that all his colleagues unanimously support him. Joining the voices of faculty members are hundreds of past and present members of the Undergraduate Society and members of the Department of Political Science. 

We recognize that this decision is not final, but in Dr. Caman's words - things don't look quite promising. In recognition of that, we are calling on the members of the university to help show the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at Memorial University that Dr. Caman deserves a new term contract as Visiting Assistant Professor.
